First, separate college checking from teen checking.
Capital One’s student page describes 360 Checking for students 18 and up and MONEY Teen Checking for ages 6 and up, opened with a parent or legal guardian. The page advertises the $250 STUDENT250 promotion with 360 Checking. It does not advertise that bonus for MONEY Teen Checking. Capital One says it does not require proof of school enrollment or a graduation date to use these fee-free checking accounts; that statement does not guarantee that a particular promotional code will be accepted. If the applicant is under 18, do not use this $250 guide as a promise of a teen-account bonus. Read the MONEY Teen account terms with the parent or guardian instead. If the applicant is 18 or older, check 360 Checking approval and the code attached to the application separately.
How the advertised STUDENT250 path works.
- Open a new 360 Checking account using promotional code STUDENT250. Capital One’s student-page footnote says this code applies to openings on or after September 8, 2026; it does not state a fixed end date. Save the promotion and confirm the code appears in the application before submitting.
- Use the new account’s 360 Checking debit card for at least 20 qualifying purchases within 75 days of account opening. Plan ordinary purchases you would make anyway.
- Keep the account open and in good standing through payout. Capital One assesses the offer after the first 75 days and says processing may take up to 60 more days.
Capital One can change an offer before it is accepted, says the offer is unique to you and nontransferable, and warns that offers may vary. Confirm your own accepted promotion; account opening is subject to approval. The page’s terms also exclude anyone who held 360 Checking, Simply Checking, or Total Control Checking as a primary or secondary owner on or after January 1, 2024. What does a qualifying debit purchase mean?
The headline requirement says 20 debit-card transactions of $10 or more, but the detailed definition calls a qualifying transaction one above $10. Because those two phrases differ at exactly $10, use purchases over $10 when planning and ask Capital One how it treats a $10 transaction rather than relying on the boundary. In-person and online debit-card purchases are listed as eligible when made in the first 75 days.
Count only after confirming
- Eligible in-person or online purchases made with the 360 Checking debit card
- At least 20 separate transactions, each safely above $10
- Transactions inside the 75-day window from account opening
Do not count
- ATM transactions or PIN-based cash withdrawals
- Zelle, Venmo or other peer-to-peer payments
- ACH payments using the account and routing numbers
- Purchases associated with fraud
A $200 transfer is not a substitute for 20 debit purchases. Save a private list of qualifying dates and reconcile it with the account’s posted transactions; Capital One determines which activity it recognizes. Read the issuer’s purchase exclusions ↗
Choose one code before opening.
STUDENT250 is another advertised code for one new 360 Checking account. Capital One’s public offer page separately describes CHECKING250, which requires two qualifying $500 direct deposits, and DEBIT250, which also uses debit purchases. Its terms say only one promotional code is accepted per account and the offers cannot be changed or combined. Do not add $250 amounts together or assume that switching codes after opening preserves eligibility. Capital One alternative 360 Checking bonus codes ↗
When could the $250 arrive?
Capital One says it assesses after the first 75 days and can take up to 60 days to process payment, for up to 135 days from account opening if all requirements are met. The account must be open and in good standing when the bonus is deposited. The student page lists no monthly 360 Checking service fee or minimum balance, but other account terms and charges can still matter. It says the bonus may be reported on Form 1099-INT. We reviewed the public student page and alternative-code page on September 15, 2026. Capital One’s enrolled terms and account records control any specific reward. This page does not establish that every student qualifies, that a teen account earns $250, or that two 360 Checking codes can be combined.
