CREDIT CARD BONUS REQUIREMENTS

Do balance transfers count toward a credit card welcome bonus?

See why a balance-transfer APR and a purchase-based welcome reward have separate rules, clocks, and costs. Check issuer exclusions before you count a transfer.

Does a balance transfer count toward a welcome bonus?

For a welcome bonus that requires a dollar amount of purchases, do not count a balance transfer toward the target. Chase’s current Freedom Flex and British Airways card terms expressly exclude balance transfers from purchases. Other issuers and invitation channels can differ; read the exact definition in your own offer before planning. Chase Freedom Flex terms ↗ Chase British Airways terms ↗

A lower interest rate is a different promotion.

A card may advertise both a welcome reward for eligible spending and a promotional balance-transfer APR. Moving old debt may use the APR promotion while adding $0 to the purchase requirement for the welcome reward.

CostsInterest can outweigh a reward if you carry purchases. Fees and refunds can change the economics.A transfer fee may apply even at a 0% promotional rate; the rate usually expires.

The CFPB confirms that a transfer fee can be charged on a zero-percent offer and that a promotional rate usually lasts for a limited period. Review the fee, amount, rate after promotion, and repayment schedule together. CFPB fee explanation ↗ CFPB consolidation guide ↗

A transfer is not a shortcut to the purchase target.

Suppose the written offer requires $500 of purchases in three months. You transfer $4,000 of existing debt and make $350 in ordinary eligible purchases. Under a purchase definition that excludes transfers, you have $350 toward the welcome target, not $4,350. If $75 of those purchases are returned, the net is $275 and the remaining target is $225. This is illustrative arithmetic; the issuer determines qualification.

At a hypothetical 3% transfer fee, moving $4,000 adds $120 before any interest. The actual fee may differ or have a minimum. Compare that cost and the payoff time with the interest you would otherwise pay. A promotional APR does not erase the balance or replace required monthly payments.

Before applying or transferring, check six things.

  1. Save the exact welcome-offer terms from your application channel, including the purchase definition and eligibility restrictions.
  2. Confirm the issuer-recognized account-opening date and the date purchases must post.
  3. Count only posted eligible purchases, net of returns; leave transfers, transfer fees, cash advances, interest, and annual fees out unless your own offer expressly says otherwise.
  4. Read the balance-transfer fee, permitted transfer amount, promotional APR length, transfer deadline, and post-promotion APR.
  5. Make a repayment plan that still works if the welcome reward never arrives. Continue paying at least the minimum by each due date.
  6. Ask the issuer through its secure app or the number on the card if a transaction’s classification or offer attachment is unclear. Keep its answer privately.

Common questions

Will the balance-transfer fee count?

Do not count it as a purchase. The Chase examples exclude fees of any kind from purchases. Confirm your own card’s terms.

Can I have a welcome bonus and a transfer promotion on the same card?

Possibly. They have independent eligibility, deadlines, and costs. The transfer does not become qualifying purchase spend just because both promotions appear on one application.

What if my app shows the transferred balance near the bonus tracker?

A total account balance is not proof of eligible spending. Reconcile posted purchases and refunds against the written offer, then ask the issuer to confirm its calculation.

Should I transfer debt just to earn a reward?

No. A transfer should stand on its own debt-cost calculation. Compare the fee, promotional period, repayment pace, and rate after promotion before making a decision.
