The short answer: the promotion’s definition controls.
A direct deposit generally means money sent electronically into an account. The CFPB uses employee pay and government benefits as common examples. A bank-bonus promotion usually adds its own limits: who must send the money, which payment network can carry it, whether it must be recurring income, when it must post, and which transfers are excluded. CFPB financial terms glossary ↗
Seeing “ACH” or “electronic deposit” in your activity does not establish that a promotion will treat it as qualifying direct deposit. Compare the sender, payment type, posting status, amount, count, and deadline with the exact terms you accepted.
ACH is a payment network, not a universal bonus rule.
The CFPB explains that the ACH system supports several kinds of transfers, including paycheck direct deposits and routine bill payments. That is why “sent by ACH” and “qualifying direct deposit” are not interchangeable. CFPB: what is an ACH transaction? ↗
Current promotions illustrate the difference. Chase limits its reviewed bonus definition to specified paycheck, pension, and government-benefit deposits. Capital One refers to regular periodic income through ACH or the Real-Time Payment network from an employer or outside entity. Wells Fargo’s reviewed terms also accept certain RTP, FedNow, and eligible debit-card-network credits. Each issuer separately lists transactions that do not qualify.

Verify the deposit before relying on the bonus.

- Write down the number and dollar amount of required deposits.
- Identify the permitted sender and payment network from the offer’s definition.
- Use the account and routing instructions supplied by the bank or your payer.
- Wait for the transaction to post; do not count a pending or reversed deposit.
- Keep the payer record and statement showing the amount and posting date.
- Ask the bank through an official support channel if the posted description is unclear.
Support can explain the bank’s record, but save its response rather than treating an informal answer as a rewrite of the published promotion. Record the qualification deadline and expected payout in the free bank bonus tracker.
Common questions
Does an ACH transfer from another bank count?
Do not assume it does. ACH is used for many transaction types, and several current promotions expressly exclude account-to-account or self-initiated transfers. The offer must include your actual sender and transaction type.
Does Zelle count as direct deposit?
The reviewed Chase, Wells Fargo, SoFi, and PNC offers listed here exclude Zelle or person-to-person transfers. Read the exact offer because definitions can change.
Does a tax refund count?
Some account fee-waiver definitions may differ from bonus definitions. The reviewed Chase and SoFi bonus terms exclude tax refunds. Never carry a definition from a different promotion, product, or fee rule into your bonus plan.
Can two smaller deposits satisfy the requirement?
Only if the terms allow aggregation or require that count and amount. Chase’s reviewed offer uses a total threshold, while Capital One’s reviewed direct-deposit option requires two separate deposits of at least $500 each.
