THE REPEAT ELIGIBILITY GUIDE

Can you get the same bank bonus twice?

Sometimes—but only when the current offer permits it. Compare prior-account, prior-bonus, signer, and lifetime eligibility rules before applying again.

U.S. guide and offer comparison reviewed . Repeat eligibility can change with a new promotion. The exact offer you use controls.
01

The short answer: sometimes, but a closed account does not automatically make you eligible again.

A bank may let a former customer earn another promotion after a stated waiting period. Another offer may exclude anyone who previously received a bonus, ever had the named product, recently closed an account, or appears as a signer on someone else’s account. There is no universal reset period.

Approval is not proof of bonus eligibility.

A bank can open the account and still decide that the promotion does not apply. Confirm the prior-account and prior-bonus language before applying, then preserve the version of the offer you accepted.

Do not infer eligibility from a successful online application, a promo code appearing on screen, or a prior reward that happened to post. The promotion’s written exclusions are the decision record.

02

Identify which event starts each eligibility rule.

Common lookback events

  • The date you enrolled in an earlier offer
  • The date an earlier bonus was paid
  • The date you last owned the account
  • The date the account was closed

Rules that may not reset

  • Never received the named bonus
  • Never held the named account
  • Never established direct deposit with the institution
  • One bonus per member or customer

These phrases are not interchangeable. “No bonus in the past 12 months” requires a prior payment date. “No account closed in the past 12 months” requires a closure date. A fixed calendar cutoff such as “no ownership on or after January 1, 2024” is neither of those. Calculate from the event named in the current terms.

Also check whether the rule covers one product, every consumer checking account at the bank, or related product names. Joint ownership and signing authority can matter even when you were not the primary owner.

Compare the current reviewed repeat-eligibility language.

This table is generated from the same publication-gated personal bank records used by BonusField’s live shortlist. It is a dated comparison, not a permanent promise that an offer can be repeated.

Keep an eligibility ledger before opening another account.

  1. Record the legal bank, product name, promotion code, and application URL.
  2. Save the complete terms and the date you accepted them.
  3. Record the account opening date and every owner or signer.
  4. Record the prior-offer enrollment date when the rule uses enrollment.
  5. Record the bonus posting date when the rule uses payment.
  6. Record the account closure date and keep written confirmation.
  7. Compare every recorded date with the new promotion’s exact wording before applying again.

The private bank bonus tracker can keep one offer’s dates and checklist in your browser. Export your plan before clearing browser data, and keep issuer records separately.

Common questions

How long do I have to wait before earning a bank bonus again?

Use the current promotion’s named event and lookback period. The comparison above currently includes rules measured from enrollment, prior bonus receipt, account ownership, account closure, and fixed calendar dates. Some restrictions do not provide a future reset date.

If the bank lets me open the account, does that mean I will get the bonus?

No. Account approval and promotion eligibility are separate. Meet the new-customer rule before applying and every transaction, timing, account-standing, and payout rule afterward.

Does closing the account start the waiting period?

Only when the promotion says it measures from closure. Other offers measure from enrollment, payout, ownership, or another event. Closing early can also create a fee or reward-reversal issue. Review the closure checklist →

Can a joint account make me ineligible later?

It can when the promotion counts secondary owners, signers, or anyone with signing authority. Check every owner’s history before relying on a joint application.

Can many applications affect future account approval?

Institutions can use specialty checking-account reports and their own policies when deciding whether to open an account. The CFPB explains that these reports can contain account history and that policies vary by institution. If a report contributes to a denial, the bank must identify the reporting company in an adverse-action notice. CFPB: why a checking account may be denied ↗
