THE ACCOUNT CLOSURE GUIDE

Can you close a bank account after getting the bonus?

Learn when a bank bonus is actually complete, which closure terms and fees to check, and how to move deposits and payments without creating avoidable problems.

U.S. guide and offer comparison reviewed . This page does not create a universal minimum holding period. Your accepted promotion and account agreement control.
01

The short answer: usually, but do not use the posting date alone.

The CFPB says consumers can usually close a bank account, although an institution may require an overdrawn balance to be settled and may charge a fee for closing shortly after opening. Outstanding checks, fees, and automatic payments can also create problems after a premature closure. CFPB: can I close my account whenever I want? ↗

A posted bonus is one checkpoint.

Before closing, verify that the bonus will not be reversed, no holding period remains, the account is unrestricted and at zero or the required closing balance, and no pending deposit, payment, refund, dispute, or tax record still needs attention.

02

Separate qualification, payout, and closure.

These are three different stages. Meeting deposit or transaction requirements can start a later review and payout period. Receiving the reward completes the payment step, but the promotion or deposit agreement may still contain early-closure fees, minimum holding periods, reward-reversal language, or account-standing requirements.

Evidence to retain

  • The promotion and account agreement you accepted
  • Opening and offer-enrollment confirmation
  • Posted qualifying transactions
  • The reward posting entry
  • Any written closure confirmation

Items to clear

  • Pending checks and card transactions
  • Direct deposits and automatic withdrawals
  • Monthly or early-closure fees
  • Negative balances or unresolved disputes
  • Expected refunds or merchant credits

04

Move the account in a controlled sequence.

The CFPB recommends opening the replacement account first, listing automatic deposits and withdrawals, rerouting direct deposits, leaving enough money for uncleared transactions, moving the remaining balance after activity has switched, and obtaining written confirmation when the old account closes. CFPB: moving a checking account ↗

  1. Download the promotion, statements, tax documents, and secure messages you need to retain.
  2. Open and verify the replacement account before rerouting essential income or payments.
  3. List every scheduled deposit, bill, subscription, transfer, check, debit-card hold, and expected refund.
  4. Move each item and watch at least one expected cycle when timing is uncertain.
  5. Wait for pending activity to settle and resolve any negative balance.
  6. Ask the bank for the final balance and exact closure process.
  7. Save written confirmation, then monitor both institutions for rejected or misrouted activity.

An unpaid negative balance or involuntary closure can enter a specialty checking-account report and may affect future account applications. CFPB: checking-account closure and consumer reports ↗

Common questions

How long should I keep a bank account open after a bonus?

There is no safe universal number. Use the promotion and account agreement you accepted. At minimum, wait until the reward posts and confirm that no holding period, reversal clause, early-closure fee, or pending activity remains.

Can the bank take the bonus back?

It can if the terms authorize a reversal and the triggering condition occurs. Check for language about account standing, fraud, abuse, early closure, product changes, returned deposits, or qualification activity that is later reversed.

Should I leave the account open to avoid a closure fee?

Compare the documented closure fee and date with monthly maintenance fees and waiver requirements. Keeping an account open can also cost money. Use the actual agreement and calendar dates rather than guessing.

Does closing a checking account hurt credit?

CFPB guidance says checking-account history is generally absent from the three nationwide credit bureaus’ traditional reports, but negative closing balances can enter specialty checking-account reports and debts sent to collections can affect traditional credit reports.
